Being the ace of AKB48’s overseas sister group, Abby of MNL48 brings Filipino pride to the 70th NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen, a musical TV show in Japan broadcasted by NHK World Channel, held in NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo last December 31st of 2019.

MNL48 Abby performed Koisuru Fortune Cookie with her fellow ace members of the other overseas sister groups – namely JKT48, BNK48, AKB48 Team SH, AKB48 Team TP, SGO48, CGM48, and DEL48 – as well as Japan’s local groups which are SKE48, NBM48, HKT48, NGT48, STU48, and of course, AKB48 and its Team 8.

She also got to sing a line in the Philippine version of the said hit song, Pag-Ibig Fortune Cookie:

“Kawaii na babaeng mukha pang modelo.”

Being the third Filipino icon to be invited as guest performer in the year-end song festival, following Gary Valenciano in 1990 and Smokey Mountain in 1991, MNL48 Abby states that “it’s a privilege to be the representative of MNL48 not just the group but the Philippines also. I think that was the one of most memorable moments of my life.”

“I think the language barrier,” she says was the challenge that she faced during her stay there in Japan. “But still, with the help of other people and the translator [device], we had that chance to communicate very well. And I believe that our music is also our language because we have that one goal and it is to give happiness to all the people who are watching us.”

“My overall experience was really awesome, because performing in one stage with the big stars is really overwhelming, and we all know that NHK annual Kohaku Uta Gassen is Japan’s biggest television music show. And as a performer, ‘you should always leave a good mark,’” MNL48 Abby concludes.

Besides the rehearsals and the introduction of World Senbatsu members at the AKB48 Theatre, MNL48 Abby also didn’t pass the opportunity to visit the renowned Tower Records in Shibuya and of course, didn’t forget to take a photo which she posted on Instagram with the caption: “I just visited the Tower Records and met some staff including Takano-san. Are you guys excited? Hmm! Follow the MNL48 official accounts for more updates! ❤❤” With her bringing the name of MNL48 and representing the Philippines, this is yet another milestone for the idol group.

This is just the start of MNL48’s growing success as they continue their journey this year with more projects and exclusive events! See them again this coming January 19th, 2020 for the Seijin Shiki Mini Live and January Seitansai.
